Castle Combe Civic Cup Race Report
Firstly I need to thank Mark and Steve for looking after us this weekend at Castle Combe, in the absence of Bert the legend, who was with the junior side of the team at Croft.
We arrived at the circuit on the Thursday evening, we went for a track walk as I had never been here before, walking the track is a great insight to what was to come on Friday.
Friday was a public trackday which allowed me to get acclimatised to the bumpy fast nature of Castle Combe, despite sharing the track with normal cars and drivers which is the norm on track days, I managed to get a good feel for it and was quietly confident for qualifying.
Saturday Qualifying came round, it was a hot day, the team and I had a plan to only do a handful of laps and not risk damaging the car for the 2 races. After the 15 minute session, I would line up in 3rd for race 1. Very happy with that.
Race one started with a start line incident which caused a red flag stoppage. Waiting in the cars for the track to be cleared was very hot, and massive thanks to the Marshalls for all their hard work, we really couldn’t race without them.
Once the race restarted I found myself p2 in the production class and on the first lap I made my way past a few cup cars, the next few laps I was just getting into a rhythm and not loosing time. Approaching the last couple laps I was right on the back on Alfie who was leading the class I did have an opportunity to pass but couldn’t act on it due to a yellow flag so I had to settle for 2nd with fastest lap of the race in our production class.
Race 2 reverse grid was less eventful for me after the first couple laps I had made a move for the lead around the outside of quarry from here I kept up my pace. We had a safety car on track due to some cars which needed recovery, I managed the gap and done a good safety car restart to take the win and fastest lap of the Production class.
A nice points haul this weekend has propelled me into 2nd in the championship at the half way stage of the season.
Something I wasn’t expecting in my first season of senior motorsport.
Our next race meeting is at Donington on bank holiday Monday, where I hope to have a repeat of these good results.
As always thank you to all my sponsors and everyone who supports me and all the members of club #28
