2024 Scholarships

In the last couple of weeks, I have entered 2 scholarships, these were the Mini challenge UK and Dragon sport.

Mini challenge was held at the Croft circuit, it was a bright and sunny February day, I had already made it through the first round back in November, which was held at capital Karts in Canary Wharf, that day consisted of karting, media interviews and pit stop team challenges.

The day at Croft was predominantly driving based, just with a little driving knowledge quiz!

There was 80 of us over the day, being put through our paces in one of the mini challenge trophy cars.

I had never driven at cross before, I’ve been there twice to support friends while they race, and walked the track, but never driven it!

First part of the driving session was just getting familiar with the track and the car! The second part was putting some lap times down, although I didn’t make it through to the final, I had a great day, drove a car I hadn’t driven before, caught up with some faces I hadn’t seen much of this season, and learn and puts some laps down at a track I hadn’t done before either, so I take away the positives. My Motorsport UK buddy, Albert walked away with the win, congratulations to him!

The second scholarship I entered was with Dragon Motorsport, this was held at the Blyton Test track near Lincoln. It was still February but it was a wet, cold windy day!

Dragon

sport run Renault Clio’s in Britcar, and the prize was a fully funded season with them!

The day was split into 5 sections, we had, time in the car, this was a left hand drive, front wheel drive purpose built race car, feels very different to a road car that races! The second session in the car was to put in some good times, while under instruction from, I had Max Coates and Alex Neville as coaches.

We had a fitness test, media assessment, sim sessions.

Despite the weather it was a great day, again, I didn’t  make the final, I think my driving was ok, I know I take instruction well, my fitness didn’t let me down, I wasn’t the worst on the sim, but I know my media is my weakness, I’m quiet guy and although I have regular media training sessions, it is still something I struggle to correct!

Anyway, massive thanks to both scholarship organisers, I am so glad I entered, I learnt on both days and always take as much away from any experience as I can.

To win scholarships is a dream come true for anyone, and I hope both winners have a fantastic season!
